The One Year Jewish Studies Program

Within an interdisciplinary academic setting, Paideia educates leaders for Europe - academicians, artists and community activists - towards fluency in Jewish sources. In renewing interpretation of Jewish text, Paideia is reviving a European Jewish voice long silenced by Communism and post-Holocaust trauma - a voice that can contribute to a culturally rich and pluralistic Europe.
Literacy in Jewish Text
At the heart of Paideia is the One Year Jewish Studies Program, dedicated to the study and interdisciplinary interpretation of the textual sources that have served as the wellsprings of Jewish civilization. The program offers a combination of traditional textual study methodology (hevruta), an academic approach to interpretation, and an applied dimension, making it a unique program in Jewish studies.
In addition to the year-long courses on Bible and Talmud taught by the Paideia faculty, world-renowned Israeli faculty teaches intensive text courses running chronologically from Torah, Midrash, Medieval Jewish Philosophy, Responsa Literature to Modern Jewish Philosophy and Literature. In order to facilitate the study of text, Hebrew is taught on three levels.
Applied dimension
The applied dimension of Paideia allows fellows to explore the question of how Jewish studies can nourish their respective fields of competence. With this in mind, fellows are required to develop one of the following:
Academic research: examining questions in Academia from a Jewish textual point of view.
Professional projects: building educational or social projects with Jewish studies at its base.
Cultural work: exploring how to nourish the Arts with Jewish content.
