Prof. David Biale

Prof. David Biale is Emanuel Ringelblum Distinguished Professor of Jewish History at the University of California, Davis. He was educated at UC Berkeley, the Hebrew University and UCLA. His most recent books are Hasidism: A New History (with seven co-authors), Gershom Scholem: Master of the Kabbalah and Not in the Heavens: The Tradition of Jewish Secular Thought.
This course will introduce students to Hasidism, the pietistic Jewish religious movement that began in the mid-eighteenth century and continues to this day. Most of the course will focus on the formative period of Hasidism in the eighteenth century but we will also discuss the important developments in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
