The key texts – poetry, prose, manifestos and criticism – will be examined in the context of the flourishing of Yiddish modernism in Europe, the US, Soviet Union and Israel in the first half of the twentieth century. We will read poetry and prose fiction by some of the main figures of Yiddish modernism: Y.L. Peretz, Moyshe Leib Halpern, Yankev Glatshteyn, Anna Margolin, Deborah Fogel, Moyshe Kulbak, Peretz Markish, Avrom Sutzkever, and Blume Lempel.
